Kim Eun Sook's All Time Favorite Female Lead

Kim Eun Sook's female lead always left a very deep impression on me. Is it because she makes the personality stand out and consistent in the personality chosen for each female lead? I didn't watch City Hall, but there are three women in Kim Eun Sook's story that grabs my attention, one from Secret Garden, A Gentleman's Dignity and the last is Descendant of the Sun. Here's my all time favorite female lead character:

1. Gil Ra Im (played by Ha Ji Won) on Secret Garden

A poor stuntwoman who wants to be martial arts movie director. She grows up with her room-mate after his father's death from saving a young man trapped in the elevator. The young man is eventually Kim Joo Won (played by Hyun Bin). Gil Ra Im is a very tough woman. She is independent and tries her best to be a martial arts actress. Although she is poor, but she holds her dignity not to be distracted by a guy who owns everything. She said, as a woman, she will never walk on a relationship that will only ends up halfway. But in the end, she ends up falling in love with Kim Joo Won because not meeting with him is even harder than being with him and going through the harsh of being poor. She is rough outside, but she's very sweet and kindhearted on the inside. I like how she is not showing such a cutie face in Secret Garden because all the time, K-drama only suggests that woman should only be cute or sweet.

So anyway, Ha Ji Won also played Ariel Lin's character on The Time I Love You as Ha Na in K-remake of In Time With You (Taiwanese 2011 hit drama starring Ariel Line & Bolin Chen). She is gorgeous here with her modern-chic fashion outfit which I like the most!!! But yeah, her character here is kinda gentle which doesn't suit Ariel Lin's trademark as Chen You Qing.

2. Seo Yi Soo (played by Kim Ha Neul) on A Gentleman's Dignity

An ethics school teacher who has a one-sided love towards her bestfriend's boyfriend. She is very strict in class and always tells her student to know what they want to do in life. When it is time for a holiday, she said, no one should study or learn anything, instead just enjoy the vacation and think about what they would want to be in the future. She also has a body like a model and also an amateur baseball referee. Sometimes, she is also awkward in social situation which makes her more adorable.

3. Kang Mo Yeon (played by Song Hye Kyo) on Descendant of the Sun

Kang Mo Yeon's character I guess pretty well almost similar to my character. She is smart, a doctor, open-minded, honest, has integrity, hardworking and sometimes sensitive. My most fave charcater is when she cried after losing the professor's position and have to recite the step-by-step guidance health issues on morning news the next day. It feels crap when all your hardwork was being paid only with a word of rejection.

Besides, I love how open she is when a guy is interested on her. She wants to meet with him, saying "Becoming a soldier is hard, so you must not have girlfriend." is a true confident woman in action. Yeah, now it's not time to drag out confession. If you feel interested, just come and talk about it. She also holds her pride in everything her do, not wanting to gain power by doing things not in a good way. She is also a senstive person, whereby we can see how she reminsced herself of Captain Yoo Shi Jin eight months ago when they first met and how intense the feeling is.

The reason why the character of Kang Mo Yeon is garnering interest lies here as well. She loves her work and confidently expresses her values, instead of just following her romantic whims. While showing strong passion and top-class skills in the surgery room, the fact that she became a doctor because she “performed the best in mathematics out of Korean, English, and math” and says that her “courage lies in working as hard as she is paid” reveals a bit of her practical side.

She is assertive even in her romantic relationship with captain Yoo Si Jin (Song Joong Ki). Instead of depending on him and being swayed by emotions, Kang Mo Yeon is always honest about how she feels. She freely expresses her jealousy by telling Yoo Si Jin that his “choice in restaurants is very ‘masculine’” when he gives a glance to an attractive waitress and her sadness when she learns that Yoo Si Jin would be returning to Korea. While she is attracted to Yoo Si Jin as a man, Mo Yeon doesn’t hide her inner conflict regarding his dangerous occupation as well.

Song Hye Kyo is receiving lots of love because of her character clearly distinct from the sweet, Cinderella-type female individuals commonly seen on TV. Song Hye Kyo is successfully portraying the pride, confidence, and dignity of female leads through the role.

Overall, although you may have seen some of them in other drama, or the story is very typical, but Kim Eun Sook is capable of telling a tightly plotted story, and grounding in a meaningful purpose, In Secret Garden for example. she constructs a story solidly that it can balance a gimmicky Cinderella story with a greater narrative. And it's also her typical to make a protutype of each character personally well to match with the storyline. A very consistent story-writting. Her artwork is my fave so far.

Notes: I also like Cheon Song Yi from My Love from Another Star because Jun Ji Hyun can throw away herself for an acting which is far from being elegant. I like how she got drunk after got heart broken. Super epic scene.

I guess, K-drama has made a lot of improvment in each character potrayal and it leads into a competitive base point on k-drama rating nowadays. Whether you give such a typical drama without some added value or you give a more interesting story to enjoy with. Let's give them the choice.
