Descendant of the Sun - Recap Ep 2

How could we are not happy to have two episodes in a week? But part of me also feel a little frustating because we have to wait another week to continue this story. Let's just jump into the recap, I am focusing more on Shi Jin and Mo Yeon on this episode 2 recap because they feel so real to my realitistic life.

Shi Jin left Mo Yeon with a worry and exciting smile. Even before riding the heli, he seems not too happy to left and stood up a girl he is interested with. Yet, he smiles because he is going to meet her for a date next week and the girl agrees with another meaningful meeting.

Meanwhile, Mo Yeon seems confused with what has happened to her, she is watching the heli as Shi Jin left. There is nothing she can do or even complain, and without any words, just by seeing her expression, I know how she feels. She looks slightly crestfallen, not overly so to make this some sort of earth shattering separation since she just met Shi Jin, but the appropriate amount of mild disappointment. It's a heavy feeling yet happy and the curiosity increases as she wonders who's that guy whom was picked up in a helicopter, got a gun shot, and in which case does a South Korean soldier can be shot? Let me tell you, in Korea, there is not much people can really kill with a gun. There must be a special reason if they can. It's either they are the Special Force Team, Spy or even Secret Team.

Shi Jin was sent to Afghanistan to be paired with a team of US commandos for a rescue mission. Two UN envoys have been kidnapped by ISIS and the joint task force is to stage a rescue mission.

The first mission goes awry as one of Shi Jin’s subordinates steps on a trip wire, but it turns out to be a mock exercise. That pisses off the US commander who insults the South Koreans with a flying knife warning and some choice insults to go home and play with mama. Shi Jin doesn’t take kindly to that and sends the same knife flying back at the US commander right between his legs. They both fought (I see how cool is Song Joong Ki and I was so concerned seeing how Song Joong Ki seems to bleed on his forehead). Seo Dae Young told the other South Korean soldier that there is no space for him to interfere because this is the real battle, either Shi Jin will be killed or kill. Besides, this fight is to ensure how skillful is the other party to check whether they can trust them or not. That's what a soldier does. Suddenly the Captain of Commando comes and handle the situation.

Meanwhile, Mo Yeon has finished her interview for the medical professor position and feels good about it, especially since this is her third time applying. A younger Dr. Kim Eun Ji walks in, so inappropriately dressed as a doctor, and reveals that she just had an interview for the same position. She wanders off to go to surgery while Mo Yeon’s friend Dr. Pyo Ji Soo is upset on Mo Yeon’s behalf since it took Dr. Kim multiple times to pass her exams and shouldn’t even be considered for this professor position.

Mo Yeon is surprised to see her rival, Dr. Kim in surgery with her, made worse with Dr. Kim claims to be the operating surgeon and Mo Yeon will be the assistant surgeon. The surgery begins and the scene is intercut with Shi Jin and his squad on the rescue mission. Dr. Kim makes a super failed surgery on the operating table and nicks the patient causing massive blood loss. Mo Yeon moves in to save the day. Back in Afghanistan, the joint rescue team encounters the terrorist kidnappers and exchange gunfire. The scene continues to intercut Mo Yeon’s surgery with Shi Jin’s rescue mission. Mo Yeon succeeds in saving the patient’s life as Shi Jin also succeeds in rescuing the kidnapped UN envoys right before they are beheaded on camera. He even keeps the US soldiers from tripping a bomb wire. Shi Jin radios in that the hostages are safe as Mo Yeon completes the surgery and orders Dr. Kim to finish up.

Mo Yeon was so pissed on how Dr. Kim can do that kind of operation and claims to be the Operating Surgeon. Dr. Kim is not that skillful and Mo Yeon hopes that Dr. Kim will know her appropriate place. Although not to mention, Dr. Kim has a powerful connection, since she is the daughter of one of the Professor. Mo Yeon hangs with her friend and she seems too fall in love with Shi Jin's x-ray picture as that's the only picture she has.

It’s date night for Shi Jin and Mo Yeon, who orders junior Dr. Lee to not call her tonight. She’s post-call and a mess, ready to head home to shower and change. Shi Jin is early and waiting for Mo Yeon outside the hospital. When Mo Yeon spots Shi Jin, she immediately covers herself because she’s not wearing makeup. Shi Jin admits he’s early and likes the feeling of waiting, wondering why Mo Yeon keeps her face from him.

Mo Yeon explains she’s a mess but Shi Jin compliments her on being pretty as is. Mo Yeon suggests they go out like this since he is into inner beauty and Shi Jin quickly offers to take her home to shower and change, lol. Mo Yeon wrinkles her nose at Shi Jin’s shallowness.

Notes: I like this scene the most! Since, well, been there and done that. Guy would say that you are pretty as it is but yeah, it is even better if you can take a good care of yourself first.

Shi Jin and Mo Yeon come home, and Mo Yeon tolds him to order a bibimbap for both of them while she is taking shower. Unfortunately, before she finishes with her hair business, she is run out of water and with a trick, she comes out of the bathroom and act that she is just finished with her hair.

Notes: I like how Song Hye Kyo doesn't even afraid to take this role. She's really a mess but sure very pretty one.

But yeah, the smart Shi Jin asked how could she finishes with her business while they run out of water. Mo Yeon quickly grabs three bottle of water from the refrigerator and back to the bathroom to wash her hair. They are so cute with teasing each other! I guess, those teasing jokes increases the attractions between them.

Mo Yeon and Shi Jin sit in the living room eating and Shi Jin wants to ask Mo Yeon something. She cuts him off thinking he’s going to mock her for this afternoon but he really just wanted to ask if she thought of him. Mo Yeon admits she did and asks him the same question back. Shi Jin also admits he thought of her, the way a man would. Nice you two. How can he is so open about it?! Gosh, I am in love with him already lah!!!

Mo Yeon and Shi Jin sip iced coffee while waiting for the movie to start. Mo Yeon brings up how the most exciting part of the movie is right before it starts. For Shi Jin, he teases back that the most exciting moment of his life is right now, waiting for the movie to start with a pretty woman and the lights about to dim. Mo Yeon brings up how she is the elderly one in his group instead of the pretty so Shi Jin suggests that in the dim lights of the theater he can’t see properly.

Shi Jin wants to know their ages since Mo Yeon must have read his chart. Mo Yeon calls him “oppa” which makes Shi Jin all happy until she reveals that she’s really older than him and his noona. Their teasing is interrupted by a call to Shi Jin which summons him back to the base. Yet again. Shi Jin apologizes to Mo Yeon who correctly points out that he’s ditching her mid date again. Shi Jin promises to watch this movie with her next time but Mo Yeon dismisses him, telling him to go as she plans to stay and watch the movie. Shi Jin heads off and Mo Yeon gets a call that has her rushing back to the hospital.

Mo Yeon storms into the office of the hospital director and demands to know why she was passed over for professorship again, and the less qualified Dr. Kim got it. The director tells Mo Yeon to try again for the fourth time but Mo Yeon points out that it’s pointless if she’s always going to be passed up for people who are well connected such as Dr. Kim.

Dr. Kim walks in and the hospital director dismisses Mo Yeon and tells Dr. Kim to come along with dinner with the hospital bigwigs. Dr. Kim doesn’t feel sheepish in the least to have won this position over Mo Yeon, and orders Mo Yeon to tape a television show for her tomorrow. She claims to be out drinking tonight with hospital top brass so she can’t do the show tomorrow morning.

Mo Yeon throws the program on the ground and refuses to do as Dr. Kim asks, calling her a shameless terrible woman. Mo Yeon pities the patients that Dr. Kim sees which riles Dr. Kim up and she grabs Mo Yeon’s hair. Mo Yeon is no pushover and grabs Dr. Kim’s hair back and the two get into an awesome bitchfest which is broken up by the other doctors.

Mo Yeon sits alone in the hospital corridor later that night trying to memorize her answers for tomorrow’s medical show taping but she’s sobbing so hard she can’t. Poor baby.

Shi Jin and his squad are checking their packs to ready for deployment when their superior officer General Yoon walks in. He thanks Alpha Team for their hard work in recent special forces tasks and gives them a long vacation, which Shi Jin later explains is actually being sent overseas to be stationed somewhere. At least it doesn’t involve being sent on dangerous special missions. General Yoon tells them to spend time with their family before leaving in two weeks for the long deployment.

Shi Jin goes to the hospital to look for Mo Yeon and is told that she’s currently on TV. He watches her do the television show and she’s quite a natural being onscreen. When Mo Yeon comes home later that night she finds Shi Jin waiting for her outside her house and the mood turns solemn with none of the banter of earlier.

Mo Yeon and Shi Jin sit down at a coffee shop to have a DTR moment (defining the relationship). Shi Jin apologizes for ditching her yet again last time but Mo Yeon wants answers from him, which he can’t give because it’s all classified. Mo Yeon reveals that she had a rough day and still thought about him. She wondered where the man who interested her went, and what he is doing? Shi Jin can only apologize and vaguely confirm that he’s in some sort of special armed squad.

Mo Yeon brings up his gun shot wound, that means he encountered being shot at, and likely shot at others. He is around death while her job is spending all day saving lives. Her fight is to keep people alive while Shi Jin uses death to protect lives. Shi Jin declares that he’s a soldier and needs to follow orders. But his idea of doing good is to successfully complete his mission. In recent missions he’s lost three comrades but what they do is to keep people they love safe. His motivation is to keep the world of his loved ones safe and free.

Mo Yeon counters that life is more important above all else and that’s something Shi Jin can’t and doesn’t want to argue with. Mo Yeon believes her meeting with Shi Jin isn’t what either thought it would lead so she takes her leave. Shi Jin understands and is glad to have met her. Mo Yeon leaves and that’s that.

Shi Jin goes back to the base to take a brooding shower, which isn’t all that brooding since he merely sorta broke up with a girl he just met. Dae Young takes another shower stall and Shi Jin wonders why he’s back so soon. Isn’t he saying goodbye to Myung Joo since this deployment will be very long. Dae Young doesn’t answer and changes to the topic to all the pretty local girls in Urk.

It’s eight months later and Shi Jin has been stationed in Urk along with his squad. The men do their drills topless since it’s so hot and all.

Back in Seoul, eight months later Mo Yeon is flying high now. She’s a permanent fixture on the medical talk show and so popular that she’s become the face of the hospital, plastered all over the billboards and displays. She’s even become a professor thanks to her popularity, which is such irony since she couldn’t get it doing surgeries all day long and got it through her fame. She now sees only VIP patients, the types who ask for Viagra to keep up with young girlfriends or asks her to run DNA tests on suspect progeny.

A purely PPL trip to Subway later, Mo Yeon delivers sandwiches to her staff to thank them for working extra thanks to the additional patients she’s bringing in. Mo Yeon can’t imagine how her life turned around so unexpectedly, a failure turned out to be a blessing in disguise.

Dr. Kim wanders by and makes her usual bitch faces, deriding Mo Yeon for claiming to be a doctor when she’s not doing surgeries. Mo Yeon tosses it right back, calling Dr. Kim not a doctor either since she sucks at surgeries. Mo Yeon doesn’t feel bad becoming famous thanks to the chance. Dr. Kim handed her, she just used it to take back what was supposed to be hers. You go girl!

Mo Yeon heads up to the roof to reminisce about Shi Jin. Girl, you totally let that man go so don’t be moping about it now. Turns out their date night included Mo Yeon lighting a candle to create the right mood and to show herself in the best candlelight. She notices the cut on his eye and asks if he got it horsing around in the army again. He teases that he did, it was a low probability but he did it.

Shi Jin points out that Mo Yeon is so busy that she doesn’t even have time to wash her hair. Mo Yeon is busy but she’s also known to be super sexy in the OR, even with an surgical mask on she’s sexy. Shi Jin sighs that he wishes he was on a date with that sexy girl. Mo Yeon finishes her flashback and sighs that she hasn’t had reason to be sexy since then. See girlfriend, this is why you shouldn’t have jumped the gun on future blocking soldier boy!

Young thief Ki Bum is now a member of Shi Jin’s squad and stationed in Urk. Shi Jin tries to school him on digging ditches but cuts himself on a shovel. He mutters that he really did get hurt horsing around in the army. Ki Bum hears that and writes it on Shi Jin’s arm. Dae Young comes by and Shi Jin yells at him for bringing this idiot overseas with them but Dae Young thinks he’s cute to have around.

Shi Jin and Dae Young head to a bar to get some wine and butter for a birthday meal tonight for one of their squad members. They see a Korean girl buying a gun from the bartender and the girl suddenly points it at them. Shi Jin ducks before grabbing the gun and pointing it back at her. He dismantles the gun and tells her not to treat it as a toy. The girl mutters that she’s buying it for protection and grumbles at them before leaving. Shi Jin and Dae Young want information about this girl but the bartender doesn’t sell information.

The doctors at the hospital talk about how some are being sent overseas to Urk on a medical mission. None want to go other than Dr. Lee who is volunteering, and his pregnant wife Dr. Jang is allowing him to go before the baby comes. The hospital Manager Director Han walks up and orders Mo Yeon to have dinner with him tonight. The crew decides to strategize about getting Mo Yeon married off to Director Han who is divorced.

Mo Yeon isn’t adverse to the idea until she finds herself standing in the entrance to Director Han’s hotel suite. He has no intention to dine out since he’s the impatient type and wants to cut to the chase. He orders her to shower first or he can shower first. Ugh, I need to shower off the grime from his sleaze. Mo Yeon can’t believe how brazen he is and lacking in manners, but Director Han isn’t even embarrassed at all. Mo Yeon walks up and whacks him with her bag right then and there. Awesome!

Mo Yeon tells her friend Dr. Pyo about what happened, figuring she can’t get fired since she’s the face of the hospital, but doesn’t know how to face Director Han at the upcoming meeting.

Supreme asshole Director Han informs the hospital staff about the upcoming medical mission to Urk, and announces that he’s naming as medical team leader the face of the hospital Dr. Kang Mo Yeon. All Mo Yeon can do is glare daggers at him.

Dae Young shows Shi Jin the list of the medical personnel coming to Urk from Seoul, and on it is Mo Yeon’s name as the team leader. Shi Jin already saw it and doesn’t seem all that thrilled. Dae Young thinks this shows the fate is not over between Shi Jin and Mo Yeon, but Shi Jin thinks they are fated but not destined to end up together. Don’t be such a debbie downer, Shi Jin!

The medical team arrives in Urk and waits on the tarmac for their UN peacekeeping transport. Dr. Song gets a call from Director Han asking to speak with Mo Yeon. He offers to bring her back if she changes her mind now. Mo Yeon not only isn’t cowed, she tells Director Han to basically F-Off after what he propositioned her in the hotel room. After she gets back from Urk, she will quit her job at the hospital and take her fame and VIP patients with her. The other team members finally know what happened to have Mo Yeon sent here.

The military helicopter lands and the wind carries Mo Yeon’s hair scarf flying down the tarmac. She goes to chase after it but pauses when the soldiers walk off the plane led by Shi Jin.

It’s all macho and slo-mo goodness, with Shi Jin striding towards Mo Yeon and walking past without acknowledging her, all the while she can’t take her eyes off him. We hear Shi Jin’s voiceover that maybe they were fated to meet but not destined to end up together.

My personal thought:

Episode 2 seems to be overflowing with other supporting cast, which I think it's a good start personally. Besides, episode 2 is now more focused on Kang Mo Yeon (Song Hye Kyo's character) rather than Captain Yoo Shi Jin or the other second lead male and female.

I like how bold Kang Mo Yeon can be. I guess that's what Kim Eun Sook always try to be very detailed on each character's personality. Still remember about Gil Ra Im? She's one of my all-time favorite character, the same goes here where we can see how Kang Mo Yeon tries her best in her career despite the suck working environment (I feel you, baby!)

Besides, after being a doctor who lives her 12 hours of life in a surgery room, without having the social interaction with people other than doctor or nurses, which means when you meet somebody quite decent, why don't you try to hold onto that person? Well, if I was, I would definitely like how Kang Mo Yeon feels the normal attraction towards Yoo Shi Jin.

But yeah,.. the reality sucks when you realize that the one you care about cannot tell you what they have been doing after being stood up 2 times. Woman just need some sort of explaination. But to think that the guy is close enough with death in everytime he does his work, who would dare to be with him? I really mean it, who would want to go through a relationship with someone who won't even be there with you? When I think about this, this type of story is really a typical drama and storyline of Kim Eun Sook.

Well, in whatever case, I think I like Kang Mo Yeon better in this episode. Kim Eun Sook did a really great job, maybe she has considered viewer's critics on how Song Hye Kyo looks plain in episode 1, but she is really a breakthrough in episode 2.

Notes:
I love the last ending, "We are fated to bump into each other, but we are not destined to be together"

Well, hopefully they will end up together! ^^

Descendant of the Sun - Recap Ep 1

With the premiere of Descendant of the Sun (DotS), I couldn't help myself for getting so excited. It's all because of my super baby Song Joong Ki!! After waiting for two and a half years, finally here it is! I never doubt the storyline written by Kim Eun Sok because she is still my favorite scriptwriter and writers for the best drama ever (on my version). Secret Garden, A Gentleman's Dignity, City Hall and The Heirs are her artwork and those dramas gain their popularity for its amazing storyline. Indeed, I didn't wish this drama ending would be like the Heirs or even Yong Pal, which story gets amazing from the start but being flat at the end.

The first filming of DotS took place last June 2015 in Seoul and on September they took off to Greece for their overseas shoot. With the background of rare pre-produced K-drama, we all wish those waited months can be paid with amazing cinematographic and storyline. Besides, with top A list actor and actress like, Song Joong Ki and Song Hye Hyo, I just jump right after my working and I could say, the first episode is Daebak! So let's take a look:

The drama opens on a tense meeting on South Korean Army whereby there is an intrusion by North Korean soldiers who have taken hostages inside their watch station. The generals sent their Alpha Team to solve it and here comes Captain Yoo Shi Jin (played by Song Joong Ki) whose nickname set as Big Boss (Lao Da in Chinese) and his second in command, Seo Dae Young (played by Jin Goo) to handle the situation.

Shi Jin and Dae Young left their base to negotiate with the North Korean soldiers. Finally after Shi Jin and Dae Young entered the watch station, the North Korean propose to have a knife fight. There were some fighting move to show and how Shi Jin shows a very confident and charming side of him as a Captain who is not afraid to die for his country. Shi Jin got a cut on his abdomen but he manages to land a knife on the North Korean guy. The North Korean derides Shi Jin for not making the killing blow since South Koreans are too weak but Shi Jin refutes that it was not out of weakness, for peace he would shoot anyone at any time. Another North Korean presses a gun to Shi Jin’s temple but he points out that a South Korean sharpshooter is aimed right at the gunman as well.

Everyone agrees then to put away their guns and the North Korean greets Shi Jin with a long time no see and Shi Jin said that he is happy to meet with him but hope this doesn't come every year as always. Finally the situation is handled with care and Captain Shi Jin came back to his border.

Another days passed, Shi Jin and Dae Young are off duty and they are at an arcade in Seoul shooting BB guns for prizes but both are missing wildly. They wonder if the gun calibrations have been fiddled with so they can’t shoot straight. The arcade manager (cameo by Kwang Soo) claims that this is the gun type used in real battle and derides Shi Jin and Dae Young for not being skilled enough to use it.

Suddenly, someone yells out to catch a thief and Dae Young pulls Shi Jin out to the street with the BB guns to shoot at the thief headed their way on a stolen motorcycle. Shi Jin complained that they are off duty and doesn't need to be involved. But, Shi Jin comes to help him and calculated the accuracy of the gun and the two successfully take down the thief, who turns out to be a young man. Shi Jin patches the beat up thief on the street while Dae Young calls for an ambulance. Shi Jin asks to buy a few stuffed animals from the arcade and uses it to stabilize the thief’s neck, warning the arcade owner not to refuse or Shi Jin will go and win every prize in there.

After catching the thief, Shi Jin and Dae Young sat at a café and each is sitting with a stuffed animal beside them. Shi Jin teases Dae Young’s cute “girlfriend” rabbit but snarks back that his is merely his “comrade” monkey. Shi Jin doesn’t know why Dae Young accepted these stuffed animals but Dae Young couldn’t say no when the guy offered them the toys begging that they never come back to the store again. Shi Jin can’t believe that Dae Young is so soft hearted, how could he have formerly been a gangster. Dae Young wonders how that thief kid is doing, pitying him because he reminds Dae Young of his own teen gangster past. Shi Jin mocks Dae Young for whitewashing his past now while going hard on that kid.

Suddenly, a call comes into Shi Jin’s phone and he shows Dae Young the caller is from the army, just not their army squad. Dae Young asks Shi Jin not to answer it but Shi Jin insists on answering it, and telling the caller to come here so that Dae Young can be a man and say what needs to be said. Dae Young bribes Shi Jin with beef and aged wine, which doesn’t work, so he escalates to introducing Shi Jin to his hot stewardess cousin with her many hot stewardess coworkers. Shi Jin accepts the final offer and allows Dae Young to take his phone and decline the call. Shi Jin demands to see pictures of the hot stewardess cousin right now which is when Dae Young realizes that his cell phone is missing. Dae Young figures out that the injured thief managed to pick his pocket as he kneeled down to help. The two head off to the hospital where the thief was transported.

The thief is wheeled into the hospital and a nurse picks up Dae Young’s phone as it drops on the ground. A call comes in and the nurse answers, asking if the caller is family to an injured patient who was just wheeled in and is the owner of this cell phone.

Here comes, our beauty Dr. Kang Mo Yeon (played by Song Hye Kyo) greets the injured thief and compliments the person who gave him emergency medical treatment. She reads on his arm a note written by Shi Jin that this person is a thief and to make sure his treatment includes some pain. Mo Yeon orders x-rays for the patient but the thief runs out of the hospital when he’s alone. Mo Yeon meets with the hospital director to show him the report that she finished writing. The director asks if Mo Yeon is done with her professor application but Mo Yeon notices the thief running off so runs out to grab him. Mo Yeon wheels the thief back inside as the nurse is getting chewed out for letting this patient escape. The patient claims that he’ll be wheeled into the morgue after his hyungs get a hold of him. The head nurse tells the patient that he can leave after he pays his medical bill, otherwise the cops will be called. The patient claims he needs to go use the rest room and gives Dae Young’s phone to Mo Yeon to hold so that he doesn’t run away.

Shi Jin has been calling Dae Young’s phone this whole time with no answer because the phone was on Mo Yeon. She notices a call from “Big Boss” and thinks it’s the gangsters calling. Shi Jin calls Dae Young’s phone again and where they were in the emergency room, he followed the sound to where Mo Yeon is stitching up a patient. Because of the ringing sound, she finally answers the call and Shi Jin notices the sound and walk over to her. Mo Yeon notices that he’s the “Big Boss” who is calling. She confirms that he’s Big Boss and asks if he’s family to the patient. Shi Jin says he’s not family but is the owner of the cell phone. Mo Yeon notices that the patient has run off again and asks if Shi Jin and Dae Young are the hyungs who are going to put the patient in the morgue. She orders the nurse to move the men aside so she can stitch up the patient.

Shi Jin and Dae Young are pushed aside and Shi Jin is clearly interested in such a sassy and beautiful doctor. Dae Young notices that Shi Jin is checking out the lady doctor and doesn’t buy Shi Jin’s fake appendicitis attempt to get out of looking for the thief around the hospital. Shi Jin has no choice but to head off with Dae Young. Mo Yeon and her nurse discuss how Shi Jin and Dae Young are clearly gangsters but Mo Yeon isn’t cowed by them.

Shi Jin and Dae Young find the gangsters from earlier beating up the patient and another kid. Dae Young wants to help and gets Shi Jin to agree. They walk into the fray and the thief begs Dae Young to help them. Dae Young wants to know why he’s being beat up? Turns out they want to leave the gang but is told to pay an exorbitant departure fee first. Dae Young notes that there has been inflation and the gangsters want him to pay up since he must be in the same profession. Dae Young takes out his wallet and offers to pay for the kid if the gangsters can get his wallet out of his hands. He calls himself the kid’s “hyung” and the gangsters rush forward to grab his wallet but are dispatched swiftly and summarily. All the gangsters pull out switchblades and rush the outnumbered Shi Jin and Dae Young.

Mo Yeon is told that the thief patient has a family member here at the hospital. Mo Yeon walks over and recognizes the woman wearing military fatigues as her medical residency sunbae Yoon Myung Joo. Mo Yeon wonders why they are always meeting because of a guy? Myung Joo demands to see the patient’s chart and rails at Mo Yeon for losing the patient. Myung Joo says the patient is someone very important to her. Mo Yeon orders the nurse to look around for the patient and if he can’t be found then have Myung Joo pay for him.

Mo Yeon runs off to talk with her colleague about the sudden appearance of Yoon Myung Joo, that arrogant medical student who did residency with them. She blames Myung Joo for taking the guy that Mo Yeon had a crush on. Clearly they didn’t date since Myung Joo is here for her boyfriend, but Mo Yeon can’t believe she’s dating a young dude. The other doctor says gossip has it that Myung Joo is dating another soldier. Myung Joo’s boyfriend is a lieutenant who came up through the army, but Myung Joo went to military academy and is an army doctor, plus her father is a three star general, so her family disapproves of her relationship because the soldier is not as high ranking.

Dae Young and Shi Jin bring the injured thief back to the hospital and run into a visibly angry Myung Joo. Shi Jin takes the patient off to the ER leaving Myung Joo to confront Dae Young.

Mo Yeon finds the nurses tending to the patient and jumps to conclusions that Shi Jin and Dae Young beat him up. The patient tries to explain it wasn’t, that the hyungs saved him, but Mo Yeon thinks he’s too scared to tell the truth. Shi Jin calls her out on that and gets an angry glare from Mo Yeon in return. Mo Yeon demands the surveillance video from around the hospital pulled and heads off to call the cops.

Shi Jin chases after Mo Yeon and asks her to not leave until he clears up the misunderstanding. He tries to explain that the patient stole his friend’s cell phone and chased him here. They found him being beaten up by gangsters and stepped in to save him. Mo Yeon doesn’t believe that, why would they save the thief who stole their cell phone? She dials the cops and Shi Jin knocks it out of her hand and explains that she can’t call the cops.

Shi Jin reveals that they are soldiers and can’t get into any trouble while on leave, so can she please not call the cops. Mo Yeon doesn’t buy his story and demands her phone back. Shi Jin shows Mo Yeon his dog tags and card but thinks she still won’t believe him. Since she works at this hospital, he correctly guesses which affiliate medical school she went to and asks if she knows Yoon Myung Joo. Mo Yeon asks if Shi Jin is the solder Myung Joo is dating? Shi Jin isn’t but asks Mo Yeon to come along so they can find Myung Joo and she can confirm their identity.

Myung Joo is near tears as she angrily demands to know why Dae Young is avoiding her? And if he plans to keep avoiding her? She wants to hear him explain, and more than that wants to hear his voice. Dae Young claims he had a change of heart is all, and didn’t leave her for any other reason. Dae Young turns to leave and the only way Myung Joo can get him to stop is to pull rank and demand that he salute her. Dae Young turns around and salutes Myung Joo while refusing to meet her eyes. She orders him to stand there like that until sunrise, she wants him to die like that before she will accept his salute.

Shi Jin arrives and makes Dae Young stop the salute, accusing Myung Joo of torturing Dae Young. Shi Jin wants Myung Joo to confirm their identity. Myung Joo calls them deserter soldiers and tells Mo Yeon to go ahead and call the cops on them. Dae Young gets his phone back from Mo Yeon who asks Shi Jin to come with her so they can watch the surveillance video to prove the guys didn’t beat up the patient.

As Mo Yeon and Shi Jin wait for the video to be pulled up, Mo Yeon asks Shi Jin what his relationship is with Myung Joo? Shi Jin says military superior and subordinate relationship. Shi Jin doesn’t know why he needs to still watch the video, now that their identity is confirmed, he looks super trustworthy. Mo Yeon sasses back that serial killers always looks trustworthy. Shi Ji pauses before agreeing with that statement which freaks Mo Yeon out since they are alone. Shi Jin tells her not to worry, his rule is to protect kids, pretty women, and the elderly. Mo Yeon is comforted since she fits into that bucket but Shi Jin thinks not. Mo Yeon claims she meant as an elderly. She asks for his name and they trade introductions but Mo Yeon declines to shake him hand. While they watched the CCTV, Mo Yeon is oohing and awing while watching the video of Dae Young and Shi Jin beating up the gangsters and teaching them a lesson. She’s visibly impressed and Shi Jin laughs at her reaction.

Mo Yeon apologizes to Shi Jin for doubting his story and the misunderstanding. Shi Jin says Mo Yeon can make it up to him by giving him medical treatment now. He points to his belly injury but she pokes it, not believing he’s injured. Shi Jin doubles over in pain and Mo Yeon is shocked to see his belly cut is bleeding. While she’s staring at his wound Shi Jin smiles looking down at her, clearly not in pain at all.

Mo Yeon tends to Shi Jin’s reopened wound and asks when and how he was injured. She recognizes a previous wound as a gunshot wound from when she worked in Africa as an overseas medical volunteer. Shi Jin claims he got that injury in Normandy, saving a comrade in a hail of bullets. Mo Yeon asks if that comrade is named Private Ryan. They stare at each other until Mo Yeon breaks the moment up to remind Shi Jin to see a doctor for follow up. Shi Jin asks to come back here even though it’s far from the base, and if Mo Yeon can be his doctor.

Mo Yeon doesn’t think Shi Jin needs to pick a doctor for such an injury but Shi Jin finds his doctor’s looks to be important. Mo Yeon laughs as she fits the bill and tells Shi Jin to come back tomorrow at 2 pm. Shi Jin leans in and wonders if Mo Yeon doesn’t have a boyfriend because being a doctor is too busy? Mo Yeon throws the question back at Shi Jin, he must not have a girlfriend because it’s too tiring as a soldier. They stare at each other and smile. Okay, these two are so into each other it’s adorable.

Shi Jin is modeling various uniforms to find the right one to wear to the hospital tomorrow for his checkup. His squad teases him for going so far when there is an army doctor right here. Talk turns to how the army doesn’t have pretty doctors but Myung Joo is brought up as a pretty army doctor. One squad member cluelessly brings up how Myung Joo got dumped by another soldier and the other guys have to shut him up as Dae Young glares daggers. Dae Young asks Shi Jin to give him a ride to the hospital tomorrow because he cares for the young thief and he came to the hospital to pay the bill on behalf of him since he recognize Ki Bum as his family. Ki Bum tries to play it cool and doesn’t want Dae Young to lecture him but Dae Young just walks off. Ki Bum asks how Dae Young got out of the gang if he didn’t pay the money or get beat up? Dae Young says he went somewhere the gang members couldn’t get to him.

Shi Jin spots Mo Yeon tending to a bleeding patient and being wheeled to the OR. He gets behind the bed to help wheel it to the OR faster and watches Mo Yeon head into surgery as she never notices him. Shi Jin waits outside until the sun has set, and by the time Mo Yeon leaves surgery it’s already past 6 pm.

Shi Jin is working out (shirtless pull ups oh yay!) when Mo Yeon calls him. She apologizes for missing their 2 pm appointment and heard that he came by. Shi Jin teases that this is the first time a doctor has stood him up but is happy to hear the patient lived.

Shi Jin points out that Mo Yeon saved his cell phone number and she tells him to save her number now as well. Shi Jin wants to see Mo Yeon tomorrow and she laughs at how direct he is. He claims it’s for medical treatment and when she gets annoyed is when he admits that’s not when he meant. Shi Jin asks to meet right now instead after some thought. Mo Yeon pauses for a few seconds until Shi Jin asks if she doesn’t want to? Mo Yeon wants to so tells Shi Jin to come over now. They hang up and both smile. (That's how it works!! Yay!)

Shi Jin walks into the hospital lobby and pulls up a movie app to check times while Mo Yeon is putting on makeup in the elevator and looking excited for her date. Shi Jin looks up on the television screen showing the news and his smile disappears as he sees there is an update about a conflict in the Middle East. Shi Jin takes a call and tells the caller that he is at the hospital.

Shi Jin calls Mo Yeon and apologizes for cancelling on her. He calls her up to the hospital roof and explains that the helicopter flying over is here to pick him up. Mo Yeon asks if there’s been a war and Shi Jin explains there is conflict but it’s not here so she needn’t worry. Shi Jin asks Mo Yeon to promise that when he comes back she will go on a date with him next weekend. Not at the hospital, somewhere else. He promises to come back safely and asks her to go watch a movie with him.

Shi Jin pulls close to Mo Yeon and asks if she likes it or not? Mo Yeon likes it, she wants to see Shi Jin again, which brings a smile to his face before he runs off to board the helicopter and looks back at her. Mo Yeon watches Shi Jin’s helicopter lift off and fly away.

A military transport plane flies through the air and inside is Shi Jin’s squad. The pilot announces over the intercom that the plane has entered the combat zone air space. The squad readies to deploy and each takes off their dog tag. When a junior member asks why, Dae Young explains that during this mission if they are killed, they cannot be identified.

Everyone stands up to parachute out of the plane as the belly flap opens to show the plane is flying towards an area exploding with bombs and fire. Shi Jin finally tells the junior squad members where they are heading into – Afghanistan.

My personal two cents:

Just dunno what I should comment, the recap is solely from koalasplayground inspiration and I just thought that I may need to put my personal thought about this drama from episode 1 till the end. Been wanting to do this since Secret Garden but I end up always with nothing. So, here comes my personal two cents.

Song Joong Ki did potrayed the role of Captain Yoo Shi Jin perfectly. I know the male lead is not made tailored to him as Kim Eun Sook picked Jang Dong Goon to potray Kim Do Jin on A Gentleman's Dignity personally since I guess he made that character to be tailored to Jang Dong Goon, but Song Joong Ki did a very amazing and awesome job in lighting up the drama. His charismatic, mature and easy going character was seen very obviously and how could I am not melted with his sweet smile?! Yes, I couldn't imagine anyone else to play Captain Yoo Shi Jin besides him. Well, I am not a super fans of Song Joong Ki since he used to be a flower boy but yeah, he is manlier here and you won't regret watching him here.

I dunno also whether it's because Song Joong Ki's comeback after two years and a half hiatus and thus we are paying more attention to him, or is it because Song Hye Kyo's character just doesn't come off as our expectation. On some of the scene, how she brings out the character of Kang Mo Yeon is just somehow flat and in my opinion, at some scene, how strong she portrays is a bit off. Overact, if I may say. She doesn't look as natural as how Song Joong Ki is very comfortable with his acting.

Although, Song Hye Kyo's acting is weak but it is not weak enough for this drama to go on, since I think they have already put so much effort on the cinematographic, good job team and the storyline, especially how open Song Joong Ki's pick up line and how they both met and fall in love with each other, is super nice and that's how the reality goes.

I hope this drama will also go smoothly with the storyline and maybe for another episode, we could see how Song Hye Kyo will potray her role perfectly.
