A long awaited come back for our lovely Suzy, the Nation Goddess after Gu Family Book and what triggers me is the main cast, Kim Woo Bin & Bae Suzy are the top lead in the industry and this is the first drama Woo Bin casts as the main male lead (I've watched his acting since A Gentleman's Dignity and very proud on how he could progress from the supporting actor to the main actor, I should also follow his steps! Anyway, congrats Woo Bin ^^)
This drama is pre-produces and aired on July 6th, 2016 and I have finally watched the first two episodes of it. Without taking too long, here's the summary of the episodes and my responses for the first two episodes;
Shin Joon Young (played by Kim Woo Bin) is a famous actor and he is diagnose with a disease which he could only live for another one year. He, himself also couldn't believe what his doctor has said to him. What I could guess, it's related to the brain, maybe a brain tumor or whatever it is, because he mentions he only suffers with a headache.
Meanwhile, Noh Eul (played by Suzy) is a documentary PD and she has a huge loan to be repaid. Since she needs money, she received a bribe to repay the loan but end up being fired from her company. This leads her to meet Shin Joon Young (SJY) who rejects doing a documentary after his tantrums on his last drama. She swears to make Shin Joon Young to do a documentary which will help Noh Eul to return to her company.
But both of them had a ill-fated relationship when they were young and end up in their separate way and meets again after so many years. SJY phoned his lawyers and asked him to find a woman for him, checks what she does for life, what situations she is in, where she lives, whether she is married of not, if she is married-who her husband is and what kind of man he is. I don't know who the girl is, since he never mentions her name but I could guess, it's Eul he's looking for desperately.
In episodes 1, SJY comes to a Yukgaejang Restaurant and asks for 100 servings of Yukgaejang since he is sick and he wants a hearty serving meal from his mother who runs a restaurant. But his mother throws a tantrum, saying she is never going to serve any meal to him. SJY finally comes back after getting no meal at all and talks to himself, asking whether he should tell his mother that he is sick and only has a limited amount of time to live.
SJY's mother look at a newspaper and notice a man, who is now a famous prosecutor. This famous prosecutor maybe turns out to be SJY's father although they don't state it directly but I assume this famous prosecutor is going to have a complicated relationship with SJY and Eul. Until high school, SJY only knows that his father is dead until his uncle tells him that SJY's mother may hide the pregnancy from the guy who made her pregnant, not because the guy leaves her and abandon SJY. SJY's mother is determined to make SJY to be a prosecutor because his father is a prosecutor too and later on, if SJY has become a prosecutor, she is going to introduce him to his father because she wants to show that even without SJY's father ability, she can also raise their child very well.
However, SJY turns out to know who his father is and determined to be a prosecutor too after knowing the truth from his uncle. He studied hard, day and night and one day during 2006, Noh Eul appears in his life, asking why he rejects to meet with her, after sending 7 letters at the library. It turns out that both of them studied at the same school. He looks her over and says she’s not his type, and she shouts that he’s not her type either—she’s here because her friend is lovesick, literally in a hospital bed and not eating, wanting to die because Joon-young dumped her.
SJY says she can just die then, so Eul threatens to kill him if her friend dies because of him. He wonders if she’s getting paid for this and suddenly walks up to her and puts his hand on her forehead. Eul is startled but shakes him away, and he declares that Eul isn’t in her right mind. Later on, SJY appears in the front of the school, brings a huge teddy doll and pretend that it is a 100th day anniversary between Eul and him which shocks Eul's friend.
Eul's Dad got into an hit-and-run accident one night and after some time at the hospital, he died and left Eul and Eul's younger little brother with a huge debt to a loan shark, They have to leave and find other places to live on. SJY who just know the story later on tries hard to find Eul but he couldn't do it after one day, Eul called him on his phone, saying how much she thanked him for carrying her father's photo at the funeral. The flashback ends there.
In the recent times, Noh Eul comes to beg SJY to do a documentary but she ends up in a road after being left by SJY. It's winter and the snow is very thick. SJY who left her comes back again to look for her. At first he is not able to find her but he ends up seeing her walking down the road alone. He runs to her and asks her whether Eul recognizes him. Eul says of course she knows, because everyone knows the famous actor Shin Joon Young.
Eul reminisce her old days when she went to a salon and get her hair done, said she is going to confess to someone and asked the ahjumma to make her look pretty till he cannot reject her. When she was done and ready to confess her feeling to that guy, she saw him hugged another girl and it turns out that the guy is Shin Joon Young. OMG, she has feelings for him years ago but end up saying she doesn't like him and he is not her type.
SJY asks her again whether she recognizes him and Eul says of course she remembers a scumbag like him. Eul also says please do a documentary because it will work wonders to change SJY's image of being a rude jerk. Eul lefts him but ends up fainted on her way. SJY runs to her and it narates that maybe this girl is not his Eul he's been looking for.
My thoughts:
I dunno why but the first two episodes do not give me an exciting feeling, instead a confusing one. Maybe I expect too much because of the chemistry on the official posters between Kim Woo Bin & Suzy and expects a nice folded story line like the first two episodes of My Love From Another Star and Descendant of the Sun.
Episode 1 reveals that SJY is sick and I bet it's going to be a sad melodrama. Hopefully SJY doesn't die at the end of the drama. I wish too. The story line doesn't seem to run smoothly, I know they cut and put them into places for an episode, but the way the story goes seems a little bit off for a good start. It was like each scene to another scene left me with a confused feeling. Besides, I cannot believe it that it is illogical that somebody can enter a famous star's house so freely. Yeah maybe it's because SJY knows that the girl is the Eul he's been looking for but somehow the way they meet again later one seems a little bit weird and being forced.
Episode 2 mostly tells us about the flashback stories when both of SJY and Eul are in high school. The pace is kinda slow for the first two episodes and I honestly think that the story up to this point is just so-so. I couldn't see the chemistry between them yet. Hopefully it will get better in the next episodes and will get even better in the future ~
