W:Two World Episode 1 & 2 Summary & First Impression

“W” is a new Wednesday-Thursday MBC drama starring Lee Jong Suk and Han Hyo Joo, and is one of the many highly anticipated dramas of 2016. There’s a lot of pressure on this drama to deliver since it will be airing at the same time as “Uncontrollably Fond,” and it’ll be fun to watch the two male leads and real-life friends duke it out in the ratings.

W tells the story of two dimensional world, alligning together which allows one of them to travel to another dimension. Oh Yeon Joo (played by Han Hyo Joo)'s father is a famous webtoon, creating "W" with Kang Chul (played by Lee Jong Suk) as the mail lead.

At 14 years old, Kang Chul was an Olympic gold medalist in shooting who is charged with the murder of his entire family. He is charged for a lifetime imprisonment. However, due to the lack of evidence, Kang Chul is only imprisoned for one year and being set free.

For one year, he is being an outcast for murdering his own family and finally decided to suicide near the bridge. However at his last moment, he chose to fight with life and take on revenge to the person who kills his family and find the evidence of the murdering. After several years, he succeed as a billionaire of an enteprise.

Meanwhile, Oh Yeon Joo is a resident of the Myung Sei Hospital in Seoul for cardiothoracic division. Her father, Oh Sung Moo is a famous webtoon artist and creator of famous webtoon called, W. Fortunately, Oh Yeon Joo's Professor really likes the webtoon W and called her just to ask whether she is really the daugther of the famous Oh Sung Moo. With her nervous looking state for being called by her Professor, she said it's true that she is the daugther of Oh Sung Moo, but her parent divorced years before but she still maintains a good relationship with her Dad despite living with her Mom.

Professor then asks Yeon Joo to give him spoilers since he knows tonight it's supposed to be the last episode. Yeon Joo hesistantly refuse him because she said that her father is very strict and very seldom to share the story even to her and it's gonna be a headache if she asks him directly about the ending story. However, Professor then promises Yeon Joo that she arrange her to be the assistant for heart surgery if she can give him the spoiler. Since it's such a very rare opportunity, she is lured with the bait and asks her father's assistant, Park Su Bong to give her some spoilers because it's gonna have some deals with her life.

However, Su Bong says he doesn't know what his teacher gonna do with today's episode, instead he says that Teacher cannot be found anywhere since last night and he doesn't have any idea what he is supposed to do with today's deadline.

Su Bong seems very worried on how the deadline will be met, yet his Teacher is no where to be found. He doesn't even bring money nor his cell phone and yet there is no news of him.

Su Bong also claims that since last night, Teacher hasn't gone out of his room and there is no one noticing he is out of the room. It's so weird that he is missing without any trace.

Oh Yeon Joo then goes to her Dad's home and checks with Su Bong about her Dad whereabouts and finds out about her Dad is going to kill the main character, Kang Chul in the end.

Yeon Joo is so surprised and wonders why her Dad is going to kill the main character in which not only her, but everyone seems to be a fan of comic character of Kang Chul.

Su Bong mentions that Teacher seems to be tired of Kang Chul and wants to end the character life at the last episode. While drawing for the scene on last episode, Teacher seems to look so happy and excited to kill Kang Chul.

Yeon Joo then refuses Kang Chul to be killed and is certain enough that her Dad is not going to kill Kang Chul and he's just out for a walk for a moment because he is also a human and maybe going through much thought since the deadline is near. It just doesn't make sense to kill Kang Chul, a character who has lived for more than 10 years to take revenge on his family and yet he is dying in the end. Many viewers will be mad if Oh Sung Moo killed the main character. Su Bong then says it's very weird that Teacher left without any traces and no one notices him leave the house.

Sensing it's weird, that her Dad is so happy to kill the main character, Yeon Joo think her Dad might be kidnapped by some crazy fans so that the ending will be changed and decided to report the missing to the police. Yeon Joo asks Su Bong to report to the police now and while Su Bong goes out the room, Yeon Joo starts to find something that might lead to a good conclusion about the whereabouts of her Dad. She saw a copy of Goya's Saturn Devouring His Son (about the Greek god who devoured one of his children out of fear that he’d be overthrown). On the back is scrawled: “Rather than be devoured, I will devour.”

As she reads the phrase out loud, Dad’s monitor begins to flicker. Yeon-joo turns to walk away from the desk, when suddenly something stops her. She’s frozen with fear, and slowly raises her hand and draws a sharp breath at the sight of blood on it.

Ever so slowly she turns around… and we see a bloody hand grabbing onto her jacket with a vice grip. Aaaaah, the hand is coming out of the monitor! By the time she lets herself get a good look, the hand yanks so hard that she gets… sucked in? She disappears, and the image of Saturn Devouring His Son flutters to the floor.

When she wakes up, she is at the top of one of the hotels in Seoul and there is a person with blood everywhere there. It's actually Kang Chul but Yeon Joo doesn't realize it instead she is pleading for help. She quickly checks to make sure he’s still alive and empties her pockets, but it’s not like she has medical equipment in her pants. So she runs down a level and bursts into a busy kitchen, where a staff of cooks is stunned when she runs in screaming about someone dying, and asks them to call emergency. She grabs a towel and a pair of scissors and runs back up to put pressure on the stab wounds, and a waiter follows her up as they wait for an ambulance. When she asks where they are, he says it’s a hotel. Yeon-joo says she’s a doctor and adds, “Though I don’t have a lot of talent.”

Kang Chul finally comes to and starts gasping for air, and Yeon Joo cuts open his shirt to find his chest bruised, likely from his lungs filling with blood. She stammers that she has to puncture his lung to let him breathe, and her eyes land on the pen in the waiter’s pocket. She talks herself out of doing something that crazy, but when Kang Chul starts struggling for more air, she grabs the pen. After another round of self-doubt, she cries, “I don’t know, they do this all the time in dramas! They just… do it!” She finally works up the nerve and stabs him right in the chest, and his eyes dart open on impact.

The ambulance arrived and Kang Chul is safe. Oh Yeon Joo can't believe her eyes, she has saved someone and become confident with her ability, stating might be she is a natural-born to be a doctor and her skills work best when it comes to real situation.

The hotel manager asks for her name and Oh Yeon Joo gives him her namecard from Myung Sei Hospital. After that the manager asks her is she a guest on the hotel. Yeon Joo says she isn't and the manager asks why is she there and how come she is there? Yeon Joo then remembers her experience of being sucked by someone but she can't explain it in words.

The hotel manager then was told by his staff that the guy who is cover with blood is actually President Kang Chul and he starts to be panicked. Hearing what the manager has said, Yeon Joo starts to realize it's actually Kang Chul, the character that her father draws and he is alive! While she starts to gather her sense, she sees the word appearing with the word, "To Be Continued" and she is transferred back to real world.

Su Bong enters the room which startles Yeon Joo. Yeon Joo asks what has happened to her. She sees the time ticks and states it's been 30 minutes and she travels somewhere she doesn't even know what has happened. Su Bong then gives good news to her that her Dad has sent the episode, with the title, "Mysterious Attack" directly to the editor and says he doesn't understand why Teacher starts to develop a new character with his daugther name as the name of the new character.

Oh Yeon Joo sees the episode and shocks to see the story as somewhat the same to what just happened to her. She just couldn't believe her eyes how come the story is exactly the same, including the clothes she wears. She starts to say something absurd to Su Bong and Su Bong just takes it as a joke.

At the other dimension, Kang Chul is safe and sound. He starts to recover and asks his secretary, Yoon So Hee to look for a girl, with the name of Oh Yeon Joo from Myung Sei Hospital. His secretary starts to report that there is no hospital with the name of Myung Sei Hospital and it's very strange because she is not spotted anywhere including the CCTV. Kang Chul then states for whatever reasons, he has to find her because he feels she is the key to his life.

Yoon So Hee then starts to claim that her president wants to look for the girl is because the girl is beautiful. However, Kang Chul states, if the girl is beautiful, then everyone is beautiful. He looks for her is because his instinct and gut tell him that this girl is the key to his life and seems to know something he doesn't know.

Oh Yeon Joo who reads the episode is getting even more shocked to see Kang Chul is looking for her. She has not heard any news from her Dad and seems at lost when she reads the story. It just doesn't make sense.

She worriedly calls Su Bong and tells him she feels the story is strange and keep saying that she feels Kang Chul and that webtoon is alive in another world. Su Bong couldn't take her joke anymore. He then tells her that Teacher is back and Yeon Joo rushes to her Dad's home to ask for an explaination.

The next day, our heroine, Oh Yeon Joo, she’s clearly been thinking a lot on the subject, ever since she got sucked into what she believes to be the parallel universe where her father’s webtoon W exists for real. Her bed is strewn with old volumes of W, like she’s been up all night trying to confirm that she isn’t crazy. She calls Dad’s assistant Su-bong again to suggest her latest theory—that Dad was kidnapped into Kang Chul’s universe just like she was, by that mysterious hooded figure. But Su-bong has had it up to here with noona’s crazy talk of parallel universes, and speaks to her like she’s got brain damage: “They’re drawings, that we drew ourselves! I drew each and every one of the backgrounds with my own hands! They’re drawings.Drawings. DRAWINGS.”

Suddenly, Dad has come back and Yeon Joo rushes over to Dad's house. Yeon Joo heads into Dad’s office and chides him for making them worry, and Dad is frustratingly vague about what he did last night: “I went somewhere.” Yeon Joo asks, “Where?” The question is rife with meaning, but again Dad is evasive. But then he asks Yeon Joo if she’s okay and not hurt, and seems relieved to hear that nothing happened to her. The fact that he asks her that intrigues her. She brings up his webtoon, and Dad says he heard about her wild ideas from Su Bong, and quickly explains that he just needed a new female character to introduce and couldn’t think of one, so he modeled the character after her.

Yeon Joo asks if Dad really drew the last two issues himself, and the air suddenly gets tense as he asks incredulously who would’ve drawn them if not him. She’s clearly struck some sort of nerve, because he asks the question like a threat, and Yeon Joo immediately backs off.

Dad prepares to work, and Yeon Joo prods him to rest first. But he sighs, “I’m sick of it. I’m so sick of it that I want to hurry up and finish so I can rest.” She finds the statement odd, but turns back to give him a little encouragement before heading out. Dad’s expression turns pensive as soon as she leaves the room. He works into the evening on the next issue, and suddenly calls Su Bong into his office to research a poison that’s easy to obtain in a hospital.

After a few hours, Yeon Joo calls Su Bong again to check on Dad. When she asks about this next issue’s storyline, Su Bong tells her furtively that her father is back to killing off Kang Chul, and she yelps in alarm. She asks how her Dad is planning to kill Kang Chul and Su Bong states about the Potassium in which Su Bong is drawing right now. Meanwhile on Kang Chul's world, there is a nurse who has been looking for Potassium in the drawer and has receives the order to kill Kang Chul. Yeon Joo paces with worry, but talks herself into letting it go: “It’s a manhwa. A manhwa. Live or die, it’s a manhwa hero.” But then she remembers saving Kang Chul’s life with her own two hands, covered in his blood.

She rushes again this time to call her Dad and asks him why is her planning to kill Kang Chul. Dad then gets prickly about her meddling on his work. Yet, she argues if Dad is going to kill him, it is just not fair for him because what he has been doing for 10 years will go in vain. He has yet to catched the criminal and take on the revenge. Dad argues again that there is no rules stating someone has yet to take reveng before dying and Yeon Joo says the readers will be disappointed knowing Kang Chul will die after he saves him in the last two episodes.

Then Dad suddenly says, "So why did you do such a needless thing?" She catches the slip right away and asks what he means, and this time no amount of denying it will get her to stop. Yeon-joo asks if Dad really didn’t draw the latest issues. She points out that he couldn’t have known what she was wearing yesterday—they were new clothes, so how could Dad have drawn them so accurately? When he has no response, Yeon-joo finally says, “You’ve seen him too—the living Kang Chul.” She says that his blood was warm and his heart was beating, and asks how it’s possible that he’s alive and real. None of this seems to surprise Dad, but it makes him more determined than ever: “That’s why… that’s why I have to end his life, right now!” Yeon Joo shouts, “No! That’s murder!” Dad is enraged when she calls it murder, and suddenly the background behind Yeon Joo starts to morph…She doesn’t notice, and screams frantically into her phone that knowing someone is alive and killing them—that’s murder. But on Dad’s end, the phone connection goes dead.

It takes Yeon Joo a while before she looks around and realizes that the coffee shop she just stepped out of is no longer there. Now in Kang Chul’s world, she’s standing in front of a television that’s broadcasting the evening news. She hears that Kang Chul’s surgery was successful, and they’re looking for a female doctor who was at the scene as the prime suspect in his attack.

Yeon Joo then rushes to the hospital and looks for Kang Chul and in the end she is able to save him again. Knowing it is Yeon Joo, the girl who has saved him the last time, Kang Chul asks her how did she knows about the Potassium and how could she be there suddenly in which she claims she is not a resident there. Yeon Joo pleads to go and she promises him to tell him many things in their next meeting, maybe after Kang Chul has totally recovered.

Kang Chul states that Yeon Joo is actually beautiful and Yeon Joo says to him not to lie because she knows him saying if she is beautiful then everyone else is beautiful which shocks Kang Chul on how she knows about that and again, Yeon Joo claims to know that Kang Chul has said that she is the key of his life which makes Kang Chul to be curious about her identity. But this time, Yeon Joo really cannot explain it all and pleads him to explain about it later on. Kang Chul agress and gives her a phone for him to call her and asks her to meet again.

Yeon Joo tries to go back to her world, stating the last time it takes about 30 minutes for her to get back. But this time it doesn't work even after she waits for 30 minutes, instead the time ticks so fast to morning. She can't believe it and suddenly the phone on her hand rings and it's Kang Chul asking her to meet. They finally meet and Kang Chul states it's been two months already which only takes a minute for Yeon Joo. She is speechless when Kang Chul asks her how she has been for two months and is there anything happened for the last two months.

Yeon Joo still gathers her mind to explain what has been happening to her and been wondering whether it's been two months also in her world, or maybe since it's a manhwa, then there is no need to have a story without the main character on it. Kang Chul then brings her to a shopping centre to buy her dress to compensate her for saving his life. Yeon Joo changes into the clothes and still tries to get back to her world, at least to make the to be continues word to appear and starts to think what she should do to end the episode and concludes it must be something big. She then walks out from the fitting room and slaps Kang Chul to be able to get back to her world but nothing really happens. Kang Chul who is left with confussion holds her hand and asks her why he should be slapped when he buys her dress and asks her to explain why she slapped him. Yeon Joo then suddenly kisses him thinking that may be the way for her to get back and yeah, the word appears, "To Be Continues" and she runs back to the fitting room and disappear.

Yeon Joo is back to the real world and Dad is shocked knowing the new episode has been sent to the editor and more than 100.000 people has read about the new episode claming it's different from the usual storyline but they are excited to see the new romance appears on the manhwa. Dad asks the editor to cancel the new episode and he will send the new one. With this, Dad says to Su Bong to just rest because he is gonna end the manga by tonight. Dad then goes somewhere to draw Kang Chul being hit into a traffic accident and he will die, but in Kang Chul's world, he is saved and stay alive which makes the manhwa Dad draws to be the same with the reality of Kang Chul's world which shocks Dad even more because the manga now takes the lead on the story itself. The story ends with Kang Chul states "Who are you?" to want to kill him so badly.

First Impression:

The CG and manhwa is so pretty and I really like how Lee Jong Suk is so similar from someone out of the comics. Han Hyo Joo is so beautiful with her medium-length hair and cute acting, she's been trying to grab my attention and I love how they made her into a good drawing.

It seems the story gets much interesting now since we know it's actually Dad who has been trying to kill Kang Chul in the webtoon. But how come the webtoon can be alive is still a mystery in which I, myself doesn't even feel the story is somewhat makes sense. But in anycase, the travelling between two parallel universe is still considered good enough for a good start and I'm waiting for the next epsiode although at this point, my heart goes more towards Uncontrollably Fond.

Cheers.
