We have been together with very little happy and more sad scenes with Uncontrollably Fond. It is one of the most consistent drama which always focus on melow story line, rather than a happy one. You will feel heavy with each episodes progressed and you will also feel the burden of Shin Joon Young. It's you who will also feel how much he actually loves Eul but he has no right for that. Many times he promised he would give anything and everything as long as Eul is alive, and many times too he tried to put everything back to normal, even though he will lose his happiness during his running out time.
I am not sure as to why Lee Kyung Hee writer-nim focus more on melodrama rather than giving a chance for them to have a happy life. Does it mean that Lee Kyung Hee's life is always full of miserable things and that's why she cannot tell a happy ending story? She has to change if she wants to make a hits drama because melodrama is not everyone's cup of taste and isn't it better to make a melodrama with a bit of jokes and happiness rather than sad story all the way right from the start? I don't know, my feelings right now is very complicated and I am kinda sad that we have to say goodbye to Shin Joon Young and Eul next week.
Based on the preview for last 2 episodes which will air next week, we would see some scenes whereby Eul and Joon Young will enjoy their lives for a while in the house Joon Young has been dreaming to have. That's the last thing for Joon Young to accomplish, to live in a house with someone he loves. But will he has a happy ending? That's the most difficult question to answer. We all don't know what Lee Kyung Hee writer-nim is planning to do. But somehow I feel this is gonna be a sad ending.
A part of Joon Young has faded and he goes back to the time he most relieve about and that's the time when he doesn't know what his father's wrongdoings. He simply enjoy his life, pursuing his biggest dreams, and being together with his fake girlfriend who turns out that she is the one he loves the most right from the start till the next 13 years. She is someone who is very precious to him, to even he is willing to destroy and ruin his life, his dreams and his happiness. But this time, after a long suffering, he is going to have a little happiness along the way with Eul, the woman he loves. I deeply hope that he is going to stay alive in whatever cases he would end up. But, is the fate really that cruel?
First, do you guys remember the first episode? Joon Young plays a character who has to die in the end but he insisted not to, which somehow if you watch the whole episodes, it indirectly gives us hint that the story will be like this. Joon Young is fated to die but his willpower to stay alive is stronger than that. He doesn't want to die clearly. Then there is Director Nam states that the writer is not going to edit the script. The finale airs tonight and they’re in danger of missing the broadcast. This gives us a big hint in my opinion that the same ending would probably happen in next week episode. Out main lead will die. Seriously, isn't there any other options?
Secondly, there is constant saying that his terminal illness cannot be cured since the tumour has grown too big and it is dangerous to even consider surgery. This somehow implies the possibility of Joon Young to stay alive is pretty low, even almost had no chance at all. However, Joon Young keeps saying that he won't die. His doctor also says that even if someone is diagnosed with a terminal illness, there is no certain rules which states their life span would only be exactly three months left. It's the person willpower to stay alive is the most detemining thing. Maybe he won't die in just a month left, but he sure will die one day. So there is also possibility for us to have an open ending like the last time I have said.
Third, is Eul going to die too? We never know. It seems that she will be sick in next week episode. There is also rumours that Lee Min Ho will be appearing on the last episode. I guess there will be a scene where Eul is going to find new love when Joon Young dies. It just that I hope the ending would at least be satisfying rather than an open ending one.
So, we are going to have an ending soon and here I am, I will give my best objective opinion regarding this drama:
1. Production Value
Seriously, I would consider that every scenes are beautiful, even too beautiful. I like the tone color, the angle of expression that the PD took, specially how they took JY's eyes and expression. Besides, Suzy may not have the best costumes here but she still looks beautiful in everything she wears and that itself match her character as Noh Eul. They are doing a good job in cinematography which engaged a lot of viewer on that aspect.
2. Story Line
It's a typical k-drama storyline. Even right from the start we all can predict what's going to happen, so the content is actually just a normal k-drama. Nothing new. But, the way the writer writes every details of the storyline is super beautiful. I like how Eul tries to gain JY's care when she is hurt, how she says she will meet JY later, tomorrow, the day after and forever, the same way as how JY tried to persuade her before.
But, I dislike how the editing team cut and edit the storyline. They are loving too many fast forwad and too many flashback, which confused a lot of viewers. If they are going to do that, it's a good thing when UF is aired everyday. But if it's not, then doing a flashback like this won't help the viewers with anything. Insetad, they will make a lot of confusion.
3. Acting of Actor & Actress
Kim Woo Bin has been continuosly mastering the character of Shin Joon Young and he's been doing a good job. There is nothing I could say anymore about him because I've been praising him for the last 18 episodes. Meanwhile, Suzy's acting has improved a lot which I see it bearable enough to watch. Maybe some of you might say she has no emotion. It's not like that, maybe her voice sounds like it but that's her trademark as Eul I think. To stay strong no matter how hard her life was hit.
In my opinion, this drama is not a failure for Hallyu Drama because seriously, I think this drama deserves even better rating because the whole story fits the melodrama perfectly. It is just that it is sometimes too cruel. We all hope for more happiness. UF just failed to air this drama on proper time and that itself compete with W who has a unique plot.
Overall, if you like melodrama, this drama is a good one to check!
This has to be the best drama I've ever seen. Great story, amazing performances by the actors (Woo Bin leaves me speechless) and so emotionally raw. This story is not for those looking for a light-hearted drama. It's a melodrama, you will feel like crying every episode but still smile at how painfully beautiful the story is. This might be why some people don't like it or can't keep watching, but for me it's refreshing not to see so many cliches (the girl actually stands up for herself, while there is a love triangle the dynamic is much more interesting). I love how they used the flashbacks to tell the story in this drama, you see their present despair while learning how they fell in love. It's not an easy story with an easy end to it, because life is also not easy, timing, people, mistakes mess everything up but most of all LIFE messes us all up. The characters are far from perfect nor do they try to be (thankfully), they are not role models in life, they're flawed human beings like us and I'm just glad I get to watch their heartbeaking yet loving story unfold. While my romantic side roots for a happy ending I don't necessarily need one, you see their love for eachother in every episode and that's good enough for me.
